Affirming Spirituality

Welcoming, Accepting, and Affirming. Don't get stuck.
https://www.abbi.org.au

This section includes houses of worship and/or communities where all people are welcomed, accepted, and affirmed as they are regardless of sexual preference, gender identity, gender expression, religion, or no religion. They also do not subscribe to the belief that LGBTQIA+ individuals will not be saved unless they remain celibate. It used to be very difficult to find affirming churches or congregations, but now there are many options. In San Antonio, we are fortunate to have a wide variety of options when it comes to finding a spiritual home that does not require people to be someone they aren't.

Some congregations are "Welcoming" but not "Affirming". They welcome all, but they require LGBTQ+ to remain celibate or else they cannot become members of the church or have leadership positions. This is the case with most of the mega-churches in the US. It's particularly harmful to youth who learn that they are not loved by the church they grew up in. It causes trauma and many youths are kicked out of their own families and churches, often becoming homeless.

The Charter for Compassion calls "all men and women to restore compassion to the center of morality and religion ~ to return to the ancient principle that any interpretation of scripture that breeds violence, hatred or disdain is illegitimate ~ to ensure that youth are given accurate and respectful information about other traditions, religions, and cultures ~ to encourage a positive appreciation of cultural and religious diversity ~ to cultivate an informed empathy with the suffering of all human beings—even those regarded as enemies."
